The CTC model
has identified 19 risk factors that increase the likelihood that
young people will become involved in substance abuse or other
problem
behaviors. These risk factors exist in the four areas of a child’s
life, and one of them is home.
CTC helps
parents to identify prevention strategies that
best match the needs of their unique community. To be effective in
reducing adolescent health and behavior problems, prevention efforts
must be comprehensive
and reduce risk in all four social
areas: home, school, peers, and the community in which the children
live. For example, no matter how excellent a school substance abuse
curriculum
might
be it is
not
likely to
be effective in changing adolescent substance abuse by itself.
More comprehensive strategies that affect all areas of a child’s
life are necessary for prevention efforts to truly be effective.
This means that in addition to good school-based curriculums, changes
need to be made at home.
